Doc Spot with Dr. Daniel Boone
What to do about Chronic Pain in Recovery? One of the dilemmas facing people in recovery, is what do I do if I have a pain issue?  Doctors tend to divide pain into 2 main categories, Acute and Chronic.  Acute pain is time limited and there is usually a precipitating event.  Such as a sprained ankle or a surgical procedure etc.   These can be handled with a combination of non-steroidal...

NA Message from Dwayne
IP #19 Self-Acceptance: http://www.na.org/admin/include/spaw2/uploads/pdf/litfiles/us_english/IP/EN3119.pdf   The problem The lack of self-acceptance is a problem for many recovering addicts. Many of the problems we experience in ongoing recovery stem from an inability to accept ourselves on a deep level. We may not even realize that this discomfort is the source of our problem because it is often...

Which came first...
…depression/anxiety or substance abuse??  The answer doesn’t matter, the solution is to look at and treat both areas.  Our great doctors and psychiatrist look at whole picture when treating our patients.  Did you know that our patients see a doctor every single day???  Every. Single. Day.  That is pretty amazing.   Here are a few books we have in the store that address co-occuring...

Smokey the Bear would be proud
As I am sure all of you know, Texas is a bit crispy right now and all the fires have caused a lot of folks to be proactive in protecting their properties.  La Ha is taking the same precautions and I thought it would be a good idea to let you guys know for two reasons: first, Serenity Hill looks quite bare and I don’t want you to be shocked when you come for a visit; second, it’s...

Work it out
The gym.  It is ginormous right?  We will “go in” in a couple weeks but just to let you know it holds a basketball court, rock climbing wall and all the fitness equipment one needs to get, well, fit.  Remember Beth?  Her yoga classes are held here too.  Although, if a love of nature keeps you outside there is also the walking trail.

This time next week....
Reunion is almost here!  I can already feel the power of recovery!  I can’t wait to sit on the lawn while listening to great speakers, getting together Saturday night for the alumni parties and then the Sunday morning meditation on Serenity Hill.  This weekend is always a small booster shot to my recovery and a way to connect to where it all began.  Check out the schedule here or scan the...

Tweets: Take 2
Back in July I did a Twitter 101 post.  This is kind of part 2 so be sure to check it out the first one for the basics.   I recently participated in my first #recoverychat.  The recovery community on Twitter is so fun! You are literally having a “conversation” with people all over the country who shows up.  It’s so helpful for just normal stuff too.  For instance, I could...

Which came first, the drunk or the people who love...
Judy in our Store recommends the following literature for family members. There are the people who took a trip through the doors of Alanon only to find they were an addict themselves!  Anyway, we are out there and here is some good literature that doesn’t always get the attention it deserves.

Unavoidable Roller Coaster
Sobriety is nothing like I thought it would be. At first, it was one big emotional roller coaster, full of sharp highs and deep lows. My emotions were new, untested, and I wasn’t entirely certain I wanted to deal with them. I cried when I should have been laughing. I laughed when I should have cried. Events I thought were the end of the world turned out to be gifts. It was all very...

Books in the La Ha Store!
Wow, it has been awhile since I have highlighted some books from the Store!  Judy is always finding more and more great reads for our patients, their families and our alumni.  Here are few that caught my eye last week.  By: Shelly Marshall By: Barbara Cole You can also write your own gifts of sobriety book.  It was recommended to me to keep a journal of all my “God stories”.  As...

The Mighty Power of a River
Some of you are familiar with one of our special tracks at La Hacienda, the optional Christian Focus track.  You also may remember Lee Roy from a previous post, he facilitates this group.  Part of his job includes baptisms in the Guadalupe river.  Below Lee Roy talks about the experience.   “As we felt new power flow in, as we enjoyed peace of mind, as we discovered we could face life...
