The Texas Youth Advocates for Legislative Change is an inspirational group of young adults. It started in 1999 by members of the Texas Association of Addiction Professionals with a vision to spread the message that recovery is possible. Today they travel to state, local and national centers of government. They tell their stories and talk about the benefits of treatment to policy makers in the hope of increasing funding. Their mission:
“Representing today’s youth who have struggled with the disease of addiction, we, The Texas Youth Advocates, humbly carry the message of hope and recovery through substance abuse intervention, prevention and treatment. Through our personal stories, and those of our families, we set forth to increase public attention and to put a face on the ever-increasing problem of insufficient and underfunded treatment, with the hope that our country’s elected officials may join us in our daily fight for a responsive and proactive solution.”
It’s a pretty amazing group, right? I know I am inspired by them just writing this blog post! The Texas Youth Advocates are always looking for new members, sponsors and connections to politically connected individuals. You can find them on their website or on Facebook!
