I recently received this wonderful letter from one of our alumni.
Kristen,
I got your email address off the LaHa facebook page.  I just wanted to express my gratitude to someone at LaHa.  I still keep in touch with Chris Raymer fairly frequently and consider him to be a teacher of mine, but I know he’s no longer there.  So, I figured you would be a good place to start.  Tomorrow (7/19) I’ll have been sober for 4 years, and it all started at La Ha.  Hardly a day passes that I don’t think about my experiences at La Ha, especially so around this time of year.  Saying “thank you” is the least I can do.  Please feel free to forward this message on to anyone else at La Ha.  You guys really do save lives.  I volunteer my time at a local treatment center - sponsoring and leading a big book study on Saturday mornings.  The 12 step journey for me started at La Ha, and I can claim every promise in the big book.  La Ha provided the focus and opportunity for me to learn the big book’s way of life, and to begin practicing its teachings.  Again, thanks so much for what you guys do.  If there’s ever anything I can do for you or La Ha, please do not hesitate to ask.  I’d love to find a way to give back to you guys.  Feel free to contact me anytime.

I would love to hear from more of you, kblack@lahacienda.com.

The alumni golf tournament was a huge success!!  We could not have asked for a better day or a better turnout!  A big thanks to Schreiner Golf Course for helping us put on such an excellent tournament; they took good care of us.  I was a little paparazzi out there; this is just a fraction of the pictures!  If you were there and want a picture, email me at kblack@lahacienda.com.

At the cookout later that evening plans were already buzzing about what we were going to do next year….

Hill Country Sunrise
I apologize that my Sunday post is late, I just got back into town from the hill country.  I went to the alumni meeting this morning and it was wonderful, I even got up to the podium.  I am up at La Hacienda all the time but hardly ever make it to the Sunday alumni meeting.  There is something about sitting in that meeting with all of the patients; it totally brings me back to when I first came in for treatment.  I had tried everything that I knew to do and it wasn’t working.  La Hacienda explained my problem (the disease of alcoholism) so well that I knew their solution (a spiritual program) would work for me.

If you guys haven’t been in awhile, try to make it up there this summer.  Maybe you could get some friends together and rent a little cabin on the river.  We have a list of the places to stay in the area on our website.  It feels good to get reconnected, and the current patients could sure use some experience, strength and hope!!

Have a great week and I will have some golf pictures up in a couple of days.  It was a huge success and planning for next year has already started!

The Alumni Golf Tournament is only a week away!  There are still a few spots left and hotel rooms available in the area. One thing I am not is a golfer; but I am having a blast listening to all the trash talk and excitement buzzing around the La Ha.  This is one event you are not going to want to miss!

My favorite hole at Scott Schreiner Golf Course by: Holly Shirley

Holly Shirley is La Ha’s other resident golfer and he knows a thing or two about the game.  Holly has been with La Hacienda for 20 years!!!  Some of you alumni probably remember him from your first call to La Ha, he is the Inquiry Call Manager.  Enjoy his musings on Hole #3 at Scott Shreiner (actual hole pictured).

Number 3 (par 5) is my #1 favorite due to its beauty and playability.  This hole would fit on any course in the world.  The really good player is able to hit 2 good shots and reach the green in 2 strokes, but one thing is for sure, he has hit his best on both shots.   For the rest of us, the hole asks us to think and play within ourselves on each shot, or pay the consequences.  The tee shot takes placement. The 2nd shot must be bold or you will leave yourself too far from the green for a comfortable approach.  The ever present Quinlan Creek meanders from left to right about hundred yards short of the green and all the way down the right side of the fairway.  It then crosses again in front of the tee. You have to remember to think and don’t give up. As far as scores, 5 is a really good score but 6 is not bad at all.

If you have played Scott Schreiner before tell us about your favorite hole. If not, look forward to a fun course and lots of laughs.

We look forward to seeing you June 4, 2011. Bring your smile.

A little note from one of our resident golfers, John Lacy.  John is Director of Organizational Development (a job that includes being my boss) at La Hacienda and one of the individuals that helped plan this great event.

Dear La Hacienda Alum’s and Friends,
The first Annual La Hacienda Golf Tournament is rapidly approaching.  I just couldn’t be more excited!  I love the mysterious game called golf, and as a former patient (1983), I feel such a bond to the magical program that helped me turn my life completely around.  The opportunity to spend a fun filled day with all of you thrills me.
June 4th is just around the corner and I urge you to call us and register soon.  It is only fifty bucks for food, prizes and fellowship!  What a bargain!  It also includes an evening on our Guadalupe River property.  We will have a bonfire, (weather permitting), burgers and hotdogs, and great speakers to cap off this fantastic day.
By the way, we plan to make this an Annual Event.  Tradition is very important to me.  Help us make this a roaring success.
Yours in recovery,
J.L.
