We have our own month! How cool is that?? And would you believe it if I told you we have had it for 22 years? The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is the driving force behind this effort and hopes that it will educate individuals and their families struggling with substance abuse and mental health disorders.
Many people do not know that there are treatment services available or that the many people who receive these services go on to live healthy, normal lives. Treatment centers and individuals in recovery are encouraged to plan events in their communities to raise awareness and erase the stigma.
Hands Across the Bridge is one of these events and most likely the largest. Three thousand people will gather in Oregon, join hands, and spread across the Interstate 5 bridge to Washington State. This is the 10th year that this group has celebrated recovery in this way.
